Customkit announces new scholarship for budding builders in association with the Building and Construction Industry Training Organisation The inaugural Customkit Carpentry Scholarship has been launched with the aim of helping young New Zealand building talent further develop their skill base. The winner for 2014 is Mangatangi/Pukekohe apprentice resident Sam Alderlieste.

Developed in conjunction with the Building and Construction Industry Training Organisation (BCITO), the scholarship launch comes at a time when the country needs new ‘life blood’ in order to cope with a number of regional building booms.

According to Customkit managing director Michael Anselmi the aim of the scholarship is to support highly motivated and aspiring new apprentices in their studies. “Right now qualified carpenters are in demand. The construction industry is the engine room of the New Zealand economy and carpenters are at the heart of the activity. As part of the country’s building landscape we believe we have an obligation to help our talent pool grow. For that reason we’re delighted to put our name on an activity that will help achieve this goal.”

According to Anselmi, for the first year of the scholarship applications were limited to those from the South Auckland region, where Customkit is based, in order to allow for suitable and effective mentoring to be on offer. Helping out in this process is local builder Shane Fisher, Director of SE Fisher Buildings Ltd, who has agreed to take Sam as an apprentice.

Anselmi says this local support will prove invaluable.
“A key part of the scholarship, over and above the financial assistance (an initial payment of $1470 and then $705 for each year of training), is to make sure the recipient can learn from key members of my team and also the likes of skilled builders such as Shane. For the first year it made sense to select someone who is close to our home so that we can make sure they can plug into our knowledge and support. From next year, and through working closely with BCITO, we’re planning on making the offer open to anyone around the country.”

Shane Fisher says his connection with Customkit is made even stronger through his support of the scholarship.
“I’m all in favour of skill development and helping young people learn to become builders. It is a great career made even more so by having involvement with quality companies such as Customkit. I’m delighted that Sam will be working with me with the knowledge that Customkit is contributing to his success as well as my company’s skill base.”

The scholarship, says Anselmi, as been structured to help those working towards a National Certificate in Carpentry (Level 4). Taking between three and four years to complete, this nationally-recognised qualification is the first step towards becoming a Licensed Building Practitioner.

Carpentry, says Anselmi, offers great career opportunities for people of all ages. “Things always need building and if you have the skill set, and the right attitude, you can really make a difference to the world around you. Whether you’re just finished school or are seeking a change to your career the building industry has a place for you. The great thing is that if you want to be a builder, you can do an apprenticeship through the BCITO direct from School.”

BCITO Chief Executive, Ruma Karaitiana, says Customkit’s vision and generosity fits in well with the work of the organisation. “We are an entity that supports professionalism, skill development and creating a better future. Our purpose is to work on these aspects of the building industry as they have the ability to increase the productivity, quality and perception of the construction sector in New Zealand. It will be a pleasure to work with Customkit in the coming years in identifying young talent and then, over time, watching the potential and skill base build and grow.”
